Oil and lubricant analysis is one of the most efficient methods of non-destructive testing, since a machine working life depends on the lubricant condition. Lubricant analysis should be performed during the equipment installation, startup, operation, maintenance and repair. Contamination (soot, fuel, water, mechanical particles), degradation and wear of a machine components change oil and lubricant properties which results in quality deterioration and service life decrease.

A periodic oil quality control enables to enhance a performance reliability of machines, reduce expenses for untimely oil change and equipment break down.

Oil degradation can lead to premature engine wear and failure. To detect changes in oil properties and possible contamination in time it is necessary to conduct a periodical oil control.

In this connection we have two questions:

  • How to check condition of new oil?
  • How to check condition of used oil?

The oil analyzer BALTECH OA-5000 is designed to check oil condition by measuring its changes in dielectric constant, caused by contamination, oil degradation and wear of components. Since the dielectric changes are directly related to the contamination level and degradation of the oil, their values allow the user to achieve longer intervals between oil changes and immediately detect increased mechanical wear and loss of the oils lubricating properties. This specially refers to motor oil, as well as to gearbox and lubricating oil. Oil and lubricant analysis is one of the most efficient methods of non-destructive testing.

Usually the oil contamination is caused by oxidation and acid buildup acid. This occurs during the normal running of an engine and is shown up as a gradual increase in readings over a period of time. Other contaminants occur because of excessive wear or mechanical failure, the main elements of which are dirt, soot, fuel, wear, antifreeze and metal particles. These elements give a marked increase in the device readings and will give immediate warning of a possible failure.
